Deze zomer vinden wederom de zogenaamde
'Balkan Streets Festivals' plaats, ditmaal in vijf Balkanlanden. Deze evenementen hebben tot doel jongeren van verschillende etnische achtergronden dichter bij elkaar te brengen via concerten en cultuurparticipatie. Platform Spartak initieert deze festivals in samenwerking met lokale NGO’s. Wat in 2008 begon als een
eenmalig evenement in Kumanovo (Macedonië), waarbij jongeren van Albanese en Macedonische afkomst voor het eerst in jaren samenkwamen op het centrale plein van de stad, groeide in de afgelopen jaren uit tot een serie festivals.
Zaterdag 12 juni vindt de Amsterdamse editie van ‘Streets’ plaats in
Studio/K. De opbrengst van Streets Amsterdam wordt in de organisatie van de festivals op de Balkan gestoken. In Studio/K spelen twee bands uit voormalig Joegoslavië:
Blla Blla Blla en
Petrol. Beide groepen zijn in hun thuisregio bekende namen. Zo speelt het Servische drietal van Petrol dit jaar voor de derde keer op het Exit Festival in Novi Sad en onlangs werd men door radiostation B92 uitgeroepen tot meest veelbelovende nieuwe act. Blla Blla Blla werd in 1998 opgericht door leden van Albanese en Macedonische afkomst en speelt nu al jaren op de grootste festivals van Zuidoost-Europa.
Beide bands bewijzen dat er naast Balkanbeats ook nieuwe, spannende muziek gemaakt wordt in de regio. Waar bij Petrol onmiskenbaar invloeden te horen zijn van kraut- en psychedelische rock brengt Blla Blla Blla een dansbare combinatie van traditionelere klanken, etno- en experimentele rock.
Daarnaast spelen in Studio/K de Nederlandse acts
Ausputzer,
Green Hornet,
Lost Bear,
Sennen en de Streets-bekenden van
Vinsky Project. Ausputzer is de nieuwste incarnatie rond de veelzijdige Groningse Fries Meindert Talma. Samen met multi-instrumentalist Jan Klug en drummer Corneel Canters vormt hij Ausputzer: Duitstalige, experimentele songs ondersteunt door onder andere synthesizer en theremin. Dat laatste kan zeker niet gezegd worden van Green Hornet, die met hun elementaire soulvolle garagerock reeds verschillende keren Paradiso overrompelden. De Nederlandse afvaardiging voor de festivals op de Balkan zijn dit jaar de Utrechtse formaties Lost Bear en Sennen. Op 12 juni is ook de
Sretno Dijete te zien, een rockumentary over de bloeiende Joegoslavische rockscene van de jaren ’70 en ’80.

Op woensdag 9 juni
in Groningen (Vera) en op vrijdag 11 juni in
Utrecht (ACU) vinden er ook edities van 'Streets' plaats.
De opbrengst van Streets Amsterdam komt geheel ten goede aan de organisatie van de festivals op de Balkan!

This summer, the already famous 'Balkan Streets Festivals' will be held in five peripheral towns across former Yugoslavia. Balkan Streets brings a broad variety of artists from all over Europe together. The annual festival gives young talent a chance to share the stage with famous musicians and perform for a huge audience in their own town. Streets is an amazing show for all young people, regardless of their ethnic or economic background. Balkan Streets Festival gives a significant creative boost to the local cultural scene.
Platform Spartak organises these festivals in collaboration with local NGO’s. What started in 2008 as a one-time event in Kumanovo (Macedonia), at which youngsters of Albanian and Macedonian background came together for the first time in years on the central square of the town, in 2009 grew into a series of festivals in the multi-ethnic cross-border region of southern Serbia, Kosovo and northern Macedonia. And this year, also the Netherlands will host several Streets events!
On
Saturday June 12 the biggest Dutch event will kick-off at
Studio/K in Amsterdam. In Studio/K two bands from former Yugoslavia will perform:
Blla Blla Blla and
Petrol. Both bands are big names in their home region: Petrol from Serbia will play this year for the third time at Exit Festival in Novi Sad and was recently announced Most Promising New Act by B92 Radio. Blla Blla Blla was founded in 1998 by ethnic Albanians and Macedonians and has played at the biggest festivals of South Eastern Europe.
Both bands prove that there's more to the music of the Balkans than just Gypsy and Balkan Beats. Petrol's sound is influenced by kraut and psychedelic rock, while Blla Blla Blla makes a dance version of traditional sounds and ethno and experimental rock.

Vinsky Project will play on the 12th.
As extra appetizer, the rockumentary
Sretno Dijete about the Yugo rock scene of the 1970s and 80s will be screened.
The ticket revenue of the evening will go to the festivals on the Balkans
